Study with structure, feedback, and time to develop.
When Still Online brings our approach to teaching into a format that can be followed from wherever you choose to study. The courses move through Sogetsu Books 1–5, combining the curriculum with the same attention we give to our studio practice: understanding why a design works, learning through making, and allowing each stage enough time to become part of the way you see.
Every lesson includes focused video instruction, a required arrangement, and written evaluation. The intention is not simply to reproduce what appears on screen, but to begin recognizing how materials behave, how composition changes through small decisions, and how your own judgment develops through repetition and observation.
Students can choose between Independent Study and Guided Study, with 1:1 Studio available when additional individual time would be useful.
REGISTRATION OPENS OCTOBER 15
YOUR STUDY PATH
Choose how you want to study
Both study paths follow the same curriculum and include personal written evaluation of every lesson. Choose Independent Study for a flexible rhythm of individual practice, or Guided Study to bring regular live teaching and shared discussion into your week.
Independent Study
Study at your own pace, with personal feedback along the way.
Follow your book through focused lesson videos and supplementary guidance, then put the ideas into practice with your own materials. Every lesson requires a submitted arrangement and receives a written evaluation from Nixon, giving you specific observations to carry into your next design.
This path offers flexibility without removing the relationship between teacher and student. Your work is seen, your decisions are considered, and your understanding develops through an ongoing exchange.
Included:
Lesson videos and book-specific supplementary videos.
Access to the earlier-book video libraries included with your level.
Required submissions for your registered book, with personal written evaluation from Nixon, normally within three days.
Access to the published weekly demonstration topic schedule.
Live-session attendance and recordings are not included. Optional 1:1 Studio can be added for private appointments.

Book 2 - Kakei II
Book 3 - Composition and line, color and mass
Book 4 - Material and Space
Book 5 Technique and Creation
Guided Study
Study independently, then return to the community each week.
Guided Study includes everything in Independent Study, with a weekly opportunity to gather around flowers with When Still instructors and fellow students. Demonstrations, questions, and design reviews bring another perspective to the work you are making between sessions.
Students from all five books learn together. Beginners encounter possibilities ahead of them, while more experienced students return to familiar foundations with a different understanding. You are welcome to attend, observe, and ask questions even without an arrangement ready for review.
Added to your course:
A 60-minute live session each week.
20 minutes total for three demonstrations—Moribana, Nageire, and Freestyle—followed by 40 minutes of questions and design critiques.
Guided-only session recordings, available for six months.
Live reviews are first come, first served, as time allows. They complement—not replace—the written evaluation of your lesson submissions.
Weekly live sessions
Tuesdays, alternating between 9:00–10:00 AM and 7:00–8:00 PM Vietnam time (ICT / UTC+7).
The first session begins November 3, 2026, at 9:00 AM. The dated demonstration schedule is available in the student area.
Books 1–4 include six months of access; Book 5 includes twelve months. Access begins on the purchase date, with video availability following the release schedule..
Tuition excludes the required Sogetsu textbook, flowers, tools, other physical materials, and certification costs. Optional 1:1 Studio is priced separately.
The textbook listings and purchase information are provided through Sogetsu. Textbooks are purchased separately and are not included in When Still tuition.
Language: Instruction is in English, with English subtitles on lesson and supplementary videos. Live Guided Study sessions are conducted in English.
Viewing: Course videos and live-session recordings are available for streaming during their applicable access periods. Downloads are not provided.
OPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL GUIDANCE
1:1 Studio
Individual time, used where you need it most.
Some questions benefit from a closer conversation. 1:1 Studio gives you private time with Nixon to consider an arrangement, explore a technique, or discuss the decisions behind your work.
Add it to either Independent Study or Guided Study and use the sessions at the pace of your learning. You might return to one design for a second discussion, bring several questions from different lessons, or book more than one appointment during a particularly productive week. Sessions do not need to correspond individually to curriculum lessons.

THE SOGETSU CURRICULUM
Understanding the books
Explore five books of progressive study, from the foundational forms of Kakei to free composition, material exploration, and a more individual creative practice. Begin with Book 1 or continue from the level that reflects your previous study.
Book 1 — Kakei I
Where the practice begins.
Learn the foundational forms of Sogetsu through moribana and nageire, developing an understanding of proportion, angle, space, and support. Early variations and freestyle studies begin to reveal the possibilities within those foundations.
20 lessons · 6 months’ access
From US$200
Book 2 — Kakei II
Extending the form.
Build on your foundations through multiple viewpoints, omitted branches, combined styles, and new relationships with the container. Formal study becomes more flexible as you explore different ways an arrangement can be constructed and experienced.
20 lessons · 6 months’ access
Includes access to Books 1–2 video libraries.
From US$300
Book 3 — Composition and Line, Color and Mass
From form to free composition.
Carry the understanding developed through Kakei into freer compositions. Explore line, color, and mass alongside negative space, learning to make independent decisions without relying on a prescribed form.
20 lessons · 6 months’ access
Includes access to Books 1–3 video libraries as released.
From US$400
Early enrollment: full Book 3 video library expected by the end of November 2026.
Book 4 — Material and Space
Reading material, responding to space.
Look more closely at the character of your materials and move beyond familiar ways of seeing them. Develop compositions that respond to their surroundings, bringing material, viewpoint, and setting into the same design process.
20 lessons · 6 months’ access
Includes access to Books 1–4 video libraries as released.
From US$500
Early enrollment: full Book 4 video library expected by the end of December 2026.
Book 5 — Technique and Creation
Defining your own practice.
Bring technique, composition, and personal expression into closer conversation. Alongside making the work, learn to explain the choices behind it—the materials, construction, spatial relationships, and thoughts that shape your individual approach.
30 lessons · 12 months’ access
Includes access to Books 1–5 video libraries as released.
From US$1,050
Early enrollment: full Book 5 video library expected by mid-February 2027.

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS
-
No previous experience is required for Book 1. Students continuing into Book 2 or above should have completed the preceding Sogetsu studies. We may ask for your Sogetsu ID or contact your previous teacher to confirm your learning history. Students who are not pursuing certification may discuss alternative placement with When Still before enrolling. Online courses are available to students aged eighteen and older.
-
Books 1 is scheduled to have their complete lesson-video libraries available when registration opens. Books 2–5 are open for early enrollment, with complete libraries expected by the end of October 2026, by the end of November 2026, the end of December 2026, and mid-February 2027, respectively.
Early enrollees receive immediate access to completed earlier-book videos included with their level. New videos are added as released. Your access period begins on the purchase date, not when the full library is completed.
-
Books 1–4 include six months of access from purchase. Book 5 includes twelve months. The video libraries included with your level remain accessible during that period, alongside the teaching and evaluation services included in your chosen plan.
Guided Study recording access is six months, including for Book 5. Course access does not automatically renew, and unused access expires unless an exceptional pause has been approved.
-
Guided Study sessions are recorded, so you can revisit the demonstrations, questions, and critiques during your recording-access period. Live attendance is not required to continue your individual lessons.
Sessions begin November 3, 2026, and take place on Tuesdays, alternating between 9:00–10:00 AM and 7:00–8:00 PM Vietnam time (ICT / UTC+7). Independent Study does not include attendance or access to these recordings.
-
Yes. Every lesson requires photographs of your arrangement from the front, left, and right, together with the lesson number, title, and a short reflection. A materials list is encouraged.
At launch, Nixon personally provides written evaluations, normally within three days. This applies to both study paths, including when your work has also been discussed during a live session or private appointment. A second arrangement may be suggested, but resubmission is optional.
-
Yes, subject to appointment availability. Your sessions are a flexible allowance, not a weekly entitlement: twenty fifteen-minute appointments for Books 1–4 or thirty for Book 5.
You may use several sessions on one lesson or spread them across your course. Unused sessions expire with your course access. Cancellations made less than twelve hours before an appointment and missed appointments use one session credit.
-
No. Students purchase the required Sogetsu textbook separately and provide their own flowers, containers, tools, and other physical materials.
Certification also requires a separate application. Official fees are charged in Japanese yen and vary by level. When Still charges a US$20 application service fee, plus shipping based on your destination. Completing the course does not automatically issue a certificate or diploma.
-
Nixon may approve one pause per course for up to three months, at US$10 per paused month. Course access, Guided Study participation, and unused 1:1 Studio credits are placed on hold during an approved pause.
Your remaining access time resumes afterward. Pauses are not automatic; please contact hello@whenstill.com to discuss your circumstances.
-
Under our standard voluntary refund policy, requests may be submitted within seven days of purchase. Approved refunds are subject to a twenty-percent administration and digital-access fee. After seven days, purchases are non-refundable under this voluntary policy.
This policy does not limit any cancellation, refund, or other consumer rights that apply by law. Please read the Course & Enrollment Policies before purchasing and contact hello@whenstill.com with any questions.
